Today, Sanergy won the prestigious Echoing Green Fellowship! Out of nearly 3000 applicants, Sanergy was one of 15 teams to be selected following three rounds of rigorous interviews. The Fellowship gives Sanergy a tremendous network of mentors and financial support as we scale to 60 sanitation sites in Nairobi’s slums and begin to convert waste into fertilizer.

After the weekend of final interviews, we had no idea how well we had fared. Every entrant was doing something spectacular – rice fortification in Mali, rural health care clinics in Liberia, peer-to-peer tutoring in DC’s toughest public schools, and reinventing the car in Kenya! It was social enterprise overload and frankly, we were thrilled just to have been invited.

This fellowship is important to us because, even in the realm of social enterprise, sanitation is a topic that few want to deal with. We believe the support of the Echoing Green community will help draw attention to the fact that sanitation is both a pressing and solvable challenge in the developing world.

We join an impressive group of Echoing Green companies. Previous Echoing Green Fellows includes Teach For America, SKS Microfinance, and City Year. These are huge, daunting shoes to fill, but in a comforting way, they help us realize that we are on the right path.

Thanks to all of our recommenders and advocates at Endeavor, MIT Sloan, within the EG community, Acumen Fund and beyond!

Peace, love and sanitation!
